   Objectives

Teaching what students need to learn.

My objective is to create a physical education class that teaches problem solving skills, enhances well-being, and positively links sportsmanship, teamwork and health into an enjoyable, prosperous lifestyle.  It is important to me that students develop numerous skills needed to become knowledgeable and physically competent in not just the psychomotor domain but the cognitive and affective domains as well.  Mastering fundamental movements and developing higher level skills involved in physical education will transfer over into other life capacities.  Strategy, technique, patience, hard work, persistence and higher moral standards are just a few of the traits students will acquire throughout my class.  Most importantly, the students will enjoy being physically active participating in physical education which will serve as a foundation for an enduring and healthy lifestyle.

Outside the Box Learning

Life presents new and challenging elements constantly, being able to cope and learning to accept new encounters is a valuable attribute. Being the first educator in the state of Maine to use and implement LL Bean fly fishing equipment was a testament to how students are able to learn and enjoy a new activity. Also, living in down East Maine, fly fishing is a healthy activity that all students can use to enjoy the outdoors while staying active throughout their lives.

Rewarding Successes

Students need to know that they are valuable. Giving them praise when they need or deserve it is imperative to student success at all grade levels and ability levels. I am not in favor of just giving out prizes, though when extraordinary behavior is exhibited or achievements are met, proper recognition should be given.

Be   Adventurous

As a teacher we need to be examples to our students. During the spring community event, I volunteered to be “dunked” in the dunk tank. This small gesture of willingness to get wet (especially when it was cold) for a community event shows students the importance of being actively involved and a contributing member of society.

" The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts".
